But here’s where it gets controversial — reports from 247Sports hinted that UNC leadership had already explored possible exit strategies for Belichick amid the team’s disappointing 2–3 start to the season. The Tar Heels haven’t managed a single win against a Power Four opponent and have been outscored by a brutal margin of 120–33. According to the report, internal discussions even focused on how to minimize the financial hit of buying out Belichick’s contract if they decided to move on.
The same report detailed other troubling developments: a player who suffered an injury during spring practices was reportedly told upon returning for fall camp that he no longer had a spot on the roster — or access to university rehabilitation facilities. That revelation has prompted serious questions about how the program treats its athletes, especially those recovering from injuries.
Adding to the turmoil, UNC recently suspended an assistant cornerbacks coach following the team’s Week 6 loss to Clemson. The suspension stemmed from allegations that the coach had provided extra benefits — specifically, sideline passes — to a player’s family during a game. These claims triggered a wave of scrutiny within and beyond the Tar Heel community.
North Carolina’s student body president, Adolfo Alvarez, told The Athletic that these allegations painted a troubling picture of internal dysfunction. He called for transparency from university leaders and pressed for a possible independent review of the football program’s culture. “I think there should be zero tolerance for non-compliance,” Alvarez stated, expressing that the institution owed its athletes a safe and fair environment.
Perhaps the most emotional part of Alvarez’s message was his insistence on remembering that players are still students — young people navigating immense pressure from academics, athletics, and constant media attention. “These student-athletes are part of our community,” he said. “Their well-being should never take a backseat to the headlines. Their families deserve the same trust and connection that UNC was once known for under our previous coach.”
Belichick arrived in Chapel Hill just last December, signing a massive five-year, $50 million deal after Mack Brown — UNC’s all-time winningest coach — was fired near the end of a rocky 2024 season. The contract guarantees Belichick the first three years of his deal if the university dismisses him without cause before 2027. Interestingly, if Belichick were to quit, he’d owe the school $1 million — though that figure would’ve ballooned to $10 million had he left before June 1, a clause clearly designed to deter him from jumping back to the NFL too soon.
And that’s the underlying tension here: can one of the NFL’s most decorated coaches truly adapt to the college game? Belichick, who commanded the New England Patriots for 24 seasons, built a dynasty alongside Tom Brady — collecting six Super Bowl titles and 333 total victories. But success in the pros doesn’t always translate to success in the NCAA, where recruiting, culture, and compliance play by very different rules.
