Following an exceptional year that redefined his career highs, Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his participation in the Nitto ATP Finals in spectacular style – securing a much-anticipated initial win that had fans on the edge of their seats.
As the No. 1 seed, he dominated Alex de Minaur on Sunday with a score of 7-6(5), 6-2, setting the stage for his pursuit of his first-ever title at this elite end-of-season event. For context, newcomers to professional tennis might appreciate that the ATP Finals gather the world's top eight players each year in Turin, Italy, where they compete in round-robin matches followed by semifinals and a final – it's like the grand finale of a long, grueling tour, rewarding consistency and skill under pressure.
But here's where it gets controversial... Alcaraz, who had previously stumbled in his opening matches against Alexander Zverev in 2023 and Casper Ruud in 2024, seemed hell-bent on flipping the script this time, even though he endured a nerve-wracking first-set challenge that tested his resolve to the limit.

“This event stands out as one of the finest on the ATP Tour, no question about it,” Alcaraz remarked. “We're up against the absolute best in the world, which underscores just how tough and significant every match is. Over the last couple of years, I've been battling to stay motivated as the season winds down. This year feels refreshingly different, and I'm genuinely pleased with myself for putting in the work to position myself for a real chance at lifting the trophy.”
From the get-go, Alcaraz dazzled the crowd at Inalpi Arena with his powerful strokes, surging to a commanding 4-1 lead with a 40/0 advantage in under half an hour. Yet, De Minaur fought back fiercely, dragging the Spanish star into a dramatic tie-break. Showing his championship mettle, Alcaraz bounced back from two mini-break deficits, unleashing a pivotal run of four consecutive points from 3/5 to seal the first set.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite racking up 21 winners alongside 19 unforced errors in that opening set, Alcaraz kept his aggressive style intact into the second. The powerful Spaniard built another strong lead but this time managed to minimize those costly mistakes, powering through to victory and extending his flawless record against De Minaur to 5-0.
“It was an incredibly tough encounter,” Alcaraz shared afterward. “On this fast court, Alex really exploits the ball's speed with his lightning-fast movements and solid returns – he's a nightmare to face. I'm overjoyed to have conquered this hurdle and thrilled with my performance as we head into the upcoming battles.”

With this swift one-hour-and-40-minute win, Alcaraz also amps up his bid for the ATP Year-End No. 1 honors sponsored by PIF, a prestigious title he hasn't held since 2022. He's now just 250 points shy of overtaking rival Jannik Sinner, where every round-robin victory earns him 200 points – a high-stakes race that often sparks debates among fans about whether ranking prowess or championship wins should define a player's legacy.
Next up for Alcaraz is a Tuesday clash against either Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti in the Jimmy Connors Group. He enters with a tour-leading 68 wins and eight titles under his belt in 2025, as tracked by the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, showcasing his dominance on the court.
Do you think Alcaraz's bold, error-prone style is a recipe for success at the highest levels, or should he adopt a more conservative approach? Is the Year-End No. 1 race overhyped, or does it truly separate the greats from the good?
