The often-overlooked Project Gemini, NASA's middle child of the 1960s space race, deserves its moment in the spotlight. Author Jeffrey Kluger, known for his work on 'Apollo 13,' has taken it upon himself to honor this forgotten program with a new book.
Project Gemini, a series of 10 crewed missions launched between 1965 and 1966, played a pivotal role in the success of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. It provided the knowledge and testing grounds for more ambitious human spaceflight endeavors.
Kluger's book, 'Gemini: Stepping Stone to the Moon, the Untold Story,' paints a vivid picture of Gemini's journey, from its challenging beginnings to its triumphant end. He believes it's time to give this program the recognition it deserves, as it has been overshadowed by the Mercury and Apollo programs.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the Mercury program has been immortalized by Tom Wolfe's 'The Right Stuff,' and the Apollo program extensively covered by Kluger and others, Gemini has been the forgotten middle sibling. Kluger aims to change that with his new book.
Project Gemini taught us how to walk in space, rendezvous and dock spacecraft, fly long-duration missions, and coordinate with other crewed vehicles. It was a program filled with drama, accomplishment, and even death. The Gemini 8 mission almost claimed the lives of Dave Scott and Neil Armstrong, and the Gemini 9 spacewalk could have taken Gene Cernan's life.
And this is the part most people miss... The Soviets may have claimed 'rendezvous' missions, but their spacecraft simply happened to be in orbit at the same time, separated by kilometers. It lacked the precision required for true rendezvous. Gemini 6 and 7 proved that one spacecraft could track and move within inches of another, and by Gemini 8, they achieved actual docking.
Gemini also saw the completion of the first long-duration missions. Gemini 5's eight-day mission broke the Soviet record for duration in space, and Gemini 7 extended that record to 14 days. These milestones were significant not just for the American space program but for space exploration as a whole.
Kluger hopes his book will showcase the intrepid nature of these astronauts and the epic achievements of their missions. In just 20 months, NASA launched 10 flights, each requiring immense coordination and excellence on the ground.
'Gemini: Stepping Stone to the Moon, the Untold Story' will be available in bookstores and online on November 11, 2025.
