In a shocking turn of events on a busy Chicago street, a family’s peaceful walk turned into a terrifying escape as a masked federal agent unleashed chaos with a smoke bomb. This unsettling incident unfolded in Logan Square, where a couple walking home with their toddler found themselves in the midst of an emergency that few could have anticipated.
On Friday afternoon, video footage captured the alarming scene outside Rico Fresh grocery store, located at 3552 W. Armitage Ave. The footage shows an SUV full of masked agents trying to access the grocery store parking lot. Local witnesses informed the Sun-Times that officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had been focusing on this grocery store for several weeks, causing rising concern in the community.
Bill Higgins and Jessica Dixon were walking home from preschool with their 2-year-old son when the situation escalated. They noticed honking vehicles attempting to obstruct the federal agents' entry. Nearby residents were also seen blowing whistles to alert one another, creating a cacophony along with the sounds of a circling helicopter.
Having lived just a block away from the grocery store, the couple suspected that ICE was specifically targeting their neighborhood. Unfortunately, ICE has not issued a public statement regarding the event.
Suddenly, smoke enveloped the area, causing panic. "It hit me before I even recognized what was happening," Dixon said, recalling the fear as her husband hurried ahead with their child in a stroller. "I thought I was outside the cloud, but moments later, I felt a burning sensation in my eyes and throat, leading to uncontrollable coughing and tears."
Dixon managed to capture footage before the smoke affected her, showing people desperately seeking water for their irritated eyes. Reflecting on the incident, she commented, "It seems entirely reasonable to expect that in an American city, we shouldn't fear being exposed to tear gas just a block from our home after picking up our child from preschool."
Fortunately, their toddler slept through the chaos and remained unharmed; still, the couple expressed deep concern for their community’s future. "I felt fear for those targeted, and I was filled with anger about that, too," Dixon shared.
In response, Dixon filed an official police report, which the Chicago Police Department confirmed has led to an ongoing investigation.
This event is part of a larger pattern of intensified ICE activities across Chicago that day. Numerous reports emerged of agents detaining individuals in various neighborhoods, exacerbated by a high-profile incident involving U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem overseeing a raid at a nearby Walmart.
Alderman Jessie Fuentes of the 26th Ward confirmed the smoke bomb incident during a press conference the same day, recounting another alarming event where she was handcuffed while trying to assist immigrants at a health center. She noted that innocent bystanders also experienced the effects of tear gas, highlighting that civilians were being subjected to unnecessary violence in the process. "Individuals simply passing by were negatively impacted, forced to pull over from their vehicles due to the pepper spray. This represents a serious escalation in tactics. It’s not just about a visible presence; it’s about an overt aggression towards our community."
Additional video footage from nearby witnesses displayed a federal agent repeatedly striking something out of camera view with a baton as vehicles surrounded the scene.
Andrew Denton, who arrived at Rico Fresh for lunch, witnessed a white ICE vehicle being blocked by a scooter rider. Rather than retreating, the agents rolled down a window and deployed a gas canister. "My eyes burned, and I was coughing right away; my skin itched like crazy. It was completely unprovoked. They could have easily just backed up."
Denton described the experience as "an alarming misallocation of resources" that disproportionately affected the Hispanic community. As someone who regularly visits Rico Fresh, he expressed disbelief at seeing ICE operating in his own neighborhood. "I just want them to leave the city entirely," he stated with a sense of urgency.
Another shaken resident, who opted to remain anonymous for safety reasons, recounted her terrifying experience as she exited the grocery store just as the smoke cloud enveloped her. "My lungs and eyes were ablaze; it clouded my vision completely," she said. Thankfully, another woman offered her a bottle of water in a nearby alley, aiding her discomfort.
Reflecting on her ordeal, this immigrant from Kazakhstan lamented, "I came here seeking freedom. Who would have thought I’d face this in America?" She condemned the actions of ICE agents for recklessly endangering children returning from school and others shopping in the area. She called on local leaders, including Governor JB Pritzker, to intervene and prevent such occurrences in the future. "Many don’t realize how fortunate they are here, perhaps because they haven’t suffered in other nations. I fear for this country’s future if we allow these violations of rights to continue. This is how authoritarian behavior becomes normalized, and I hope people don’t get accustomed to it."
While this terrifying experience left Dixon and Higgins rattled, they found solace in the swift community response that emerged during the chaos. Families leaving preschool, grocery shoppers, and local residents all banded together, sounding horns, blowing whistles, and shouting to keep each other informed and safe.
"The community’s reaction was remarkable; everyone ensured that those nearby understood what was transpiring," Dixon recounted. "People immediately began alerting schools and family members, demonstrating such rapid coordination in the face of this incident."
